Services Provided

Comprehensive Musculoskeletal Evaluations

Your first appointment will begin with a thorough history followed by a physical examination designed to diagnose the primary source of pain/dysfunction and determine gain generator(s) that need to be addressed to restore function. Common components of the evaluation include musculoskeletal palpation and assessment, posture assessment, range of motion and mobility assessment, nonfunctional and functional strength assessment, and special tests and movement patterns.

In addition to the biomedical component of this evaluation, the patient and clinician will discuss both psychological and social factors that may be contributing to the dysfunction / pain / injury patterns. Together the clinician and patient will develop a comprehensive plan of care based on findings during the evaluation, patient goals, and clinician expertise.
Therapeutic Interventions

Intevention strategies may include manual therapy techniques (i.e. soft tissue manipulation), therapeutic modality use (i.e. shockwave therapy), corrective exercise solutions (i.e. mobility, strength, proprioception, agility, power, functional performance), and/or psychological interventions (i.e performance imagery, goal setting, development of coping strategy solutions).
Comprehensive Concussion Evaluation and Management

Your first appointment will begin with a thorough history followed by a physical examination designed to diagnose the primary source of pain/dysfunction and determine gain generator(s) that need to be addressed to restore function. Patients will be put through a guided evaluation to determine what type of clinical presentation the concussion may be manifesting through.

Concussions can be the cause of insult to different parts of the body (brain, neck, eyes, nervous system, etc) and it is important to determine what “type” of concussions you may have to determine how to best manage this injury.

Common Types of Concussions:
- Cognitive/Fatigue
- Headache/Migraine
- Cervical/Neck
- Oculomotor
- Vestibular
- Cardiovascular/Physiologic
- Affective/Mood

Therapeutic Interventions Provided

Individually tailored exercises chosen to address the pain generators and source of pain that was determined during the comprehensive evaluation process. Exercises may include mobility, range of motion, strength, balance, power, speed, agility, coordination, neurocognitive and functional movements.
The Western medicine approach of “acupuncture” is used to assess and manipulate soft tissue. Dry needling can be used on bone, joint capsules, tendons, ligaments, muscles, fascia, pockets of swelling/edema. There are several mechanisms that can be used to target both a local (site of injury) and systemic (brain, pain) response.
The Western medicine approach of “cupping” is used to assess and correct movement-based impairments and create a physiologic response. Myofascial decompression uses negative pressure to lift the soft tissue in order to decompress or reduce pressure in the area. As the body attempts to respond to this negative pressure there is an increase in blood flow and microcirculation which has positive effects on the inflammatory process, repair process specific to the fascial, and muscular systems. myofascial decompression can be a great technique to help “periodize treatments” because when we think of all our manual therapy techniques they all compress the tissue, but this actually works to distract the tissue.
Fascial Manipulation is a manual therapy technique (it almost looks like a massage or positional release technique) which aims to target the health and hydration of the fascial system. Using this technique along very specific fascial points, we heat the connective tissue, to improve the sliding, and force transmission capabilities. This will aim to restore mobility, function and pain patterns.
Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) is a training method that partially restricts the arterial inflow and occludes venous outflow in musculature during exercise. The technique involves applying an external pressure cuff to the most proximal region of the limb, followed by exercise. With BFR an adaptive response of muscular strength and hypertrophy are reached at lower training loads, that are comparable (or better) that conventional high intensity resistance training. In addition to the positive results demonstrated in muscle strength, other tissues such as bone, tendon, neuromuscular and blood vessels have demonstrated positive impacts. BFR training can help to bridge the gap during your rehabilitation to sport performance or physical activity.
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive modality that uses acoustic pressure waves delivered through the body and focused on the site of pain or pathology. These radial pressure waves are believed to increase blood flow and metabolic activity around the site of pain and accelerate the healing process. Treatment effects include pain relief, tissue regeneration, and destruction of calcification.
Individually tailored exercises chosen to address the pain generators and source of pain that was determined during the comprehensive evaluation process. Intervention programs will differ depending of the type of concussion identified.
